Matsuya Seika “Sake candies offered to the gods”

“OSake candies offered to the gods” is a sweet made from Amazake, originally created as a souvenir for pilgrims visiting Ise.

These amazake candies contain sake lees from the sake offered to the deities at Ise Grand Shrine.

Ise Grand Shrine has been such a famous tourist destination that the phrase “Ise pilgrimage” has been in use since the Edo period.

The candy comes in two sizes: a large “boxed” version and a “bagged” version.

The boxed version features an illustration of a pilgrimage to Ise.

The boxed and bagged versions have different net weights: the boxed version is 180g, and the bagged version is 105g.

It felt like there was nearly twice as much in the box as in the bag.

Unlike regular candy, it feels slightly soft to the touch—about as firm as caramel.

When I take a bite, the gentle aroma and flavor of sake lees fill my mouth. As it melts in my mouth, I feel a gentle, subtle sweetness—it’s amazake candy.

It was about as hard as caramel, but once it was in my mouth, it softened up and was very easy to eat.
