Furumachi Koji Seizosho “Summer Koji Tomato”

Here’s an introduction to Furumachi Koji Seizosho’s “Summer Koji Tomato.”

“Summer Koji Tomato” is an amazake made from rice koji.

This non-alcoholic, sugar-free amazake contains bright red tomatoes that have grown while soaking up plenty of the sun’s rays.

Since the rice particles in amazake settle at the bottom, be sure to shake it well before drinking.

- With tomato paste
- Non-alcoholic
- No sugar added
- For a limited time
Recognizing the wonders of koji, the company opened a specialty koji store in Furumachi, Niigata, in 2009.

The amazake comes in a glass bottle with a green lid.

The amazake was 500 ml, and I enjoyed it by drinking it in several servings.

Since the amazake is tomato-flavored, the glass bottle has a label featuring a tomato.

The tomatoes on the label are made to look like grains of rice using amazake made from rice koji.

Furumachi Koji Seizosho is known not only for its amazake but also for its amazake-based sweets, which feature unique and adorable labels.

Here is a list of amazake labels.
My thoughts on drinking amazake

The amazake poured into the cup is a gentle vermilion color—a milky white tinged with the red of tomatoes.

It was an amazake that, as soon as I took a sip, filled my mouth with the gentle aroma and sweetness of rice koji and the fresh flavor of tomatoes.

Before drinking it, I couldn’t help but brace myself, thinking it might be a type of amazake that tasted more like vegetable juice, but it turned out to be an amazake where the gentle sweetness of the rice koji perfectly balanced the tomato’s grassy flavor, allowing me to fully enjoy its tomato taste.
